WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Urban Shocker robbed Art Devlin of a base hit.
Dan McGann had 3 base hits and 3 RBI and Christy Mathewson delivered 9 solid
innings as the NY (AL) 1905 Giants topped the St.L. (AL) 1922 Browns by a
score of 8 to 2 at the ballpark.
NY (AL) 1905 jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 4th inning with 2 runs
on 2 hits. Mike Donlin got things going when he reached on an error. Donlin
then stole second base. McGann then laced a base-knock. Sam Mertes was up
next and he slapped a single scoring a run. NY (AL) 1905 continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base. George Browne was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. One out later, Urban Shocker came up and he was
wild with a pitch scoring the final run of the inning. NY (AL) 1905 totaled
13 hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Mathewson(2-0) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Shocker(0-2) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 11 hits and 4 walks
in 7 innings.
St.L. (AL) 1922's manager was obviously impressed with the pitching of
Mathewson, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon.
We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just
hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'
