Christy Mathewson went the distance as the NY (AL) 1905 Giants staged a
dramatic comeback over the S.F. 1962 Giants by a score of 4 to 3 at the
ballpark.
NY (AL) 1905 came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
using 3 hits. Billy Gilbert kicked off the action when he stroked a
base-hit. Gilbert was safe at second on a stolen base. Art Devlin then
banged out a single. NY (AL) 1905 continued their aggressive style with
another stolen base. After an out was recorded, Billy O'Dell stepped up to
the plate and he let loose a wild pitch plating a run. Mike Donlin kept
things alive and laced a single giving NY (AL) 1905 the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd. NY (AL) 1905 won despite being out-hit by
S.F. 1962 9 hits to 6.
The victory went to Mathewson(1-0) who went the distance allowing 3 runs.
O'Dell(0-1) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 8
and 1/3 innings.
'Now that is what I call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like
this, of course,' NY (AL) 1905's manager offered. 'Everyone at the stadium
had a great time - did you see the fans go wild there at the end?!'
